This but a wee demo of what you can do by creating your own Page that could, via the Settings -> Reading options, be made to be the homepage of your TRU Writer SPLOT. This way you can create a landing page with a welcome or guide specific to your site, rather than just the newest posts.
But.. with some extra effort, you can create a grid-like display different than what this theme provides. This example uses the WordPress Query Block, but see other options from WPBeginner for creating grid views.
